The race from Santo Giulia to Bonifacio proved a taxing one for Skylark. Despite a strong start at the favoured end of the line on port tack, the loading of the new reaching mizzen staysail was such that half way through the race the port mizzen runner parted where it has been spliced around the masthead.
The crew quickly lowered the staysail whilst the repairs were made but in this process the boat speed dropped by half a knot for three of four minutes and in this time the smaller yacht, Sonda, which had been pursuing Skylark closely all week, crept ahead on corrected time beating Skylark by race end by 50 seconds.
